A day in Tavira

21-04-2019 posted by O Tartufo

We have been living in this area for almost 8 years now, but have actually been coming to the beautiful town of Tavira for even longer. Every year we discover new shops and restaurants. It's now time to share a few favourite places. The city is divided by the Gilão river and on both sides you can find beautiful streets and alleys, wonderfull to stroll around. Would you like to join us on a day out in Tavira? Here we go:

In the morning it is nice to start with a good Portuguese cup of coffee at Café Tavira Antiga, and you can't miss out on some traditional homemade pastries. Opposite the old market hall you will find the Baú de Barro shop, where they also sell our ceramic brand Sempre Agosto. This store only sells products from Portugal and it is definitely worth a look. Vanessa is the enthusiastic owner and will gladly provide you with more information about the various artists.

Blossom Fotos and More by Ron Isarin is located next to the ceramics shop. Here you will find beautiful photos and postcards of Tavira and the surrounding area. Ron is a Dutch photographer, and he has been living in this beautiful region for years. The photos you see in this blog were made by Ron and can be ordered on Canvas, among other things!

After these few stop, do you fancy something cold or something sweet? Then you have to go to Muxagata for an ice cream. Delicious home-made ice cream in many flavours. Michelle recently had the dark chocolate ice cream and almost an hour later she was still on a chocolate and sugar high.

Full of renewed energy because of this ice cream, you can continue to the Camera Obscura in the old water tower. Here you get an interesting tour and original view of the city. Via the old city wall and city garden, you descend via the stairs towards the shopping street. Here you will find Carmo de Saude, she makes beautiful tiles and dishes. If you are looking for a beautiful gift, then you will certainly succeed here.

When you walk south along the river you will automatically see the boat dock with the ferry that will take you to the island of Tavira. This pleasant trip to "Ilha da Tavira" takes fifteen minutes and after a short walk you are on the ocean side of the island with a beautiful beach in front of you. Did you feel like swimming and sunbathing? Afterwards you can have a delicious lunch at Restaurant Sal with a beautiful view of the sea. After a walk you just take the boat back to the center.

Is it time time already? Time to sit down and have an afternoon drink? On the roof terrace of the Maria Nova Hotel you can enjoy the beautiful view at sunset, of course with a drink and a tapa. Or have you been hungry from all the fresh air?

Then you go to restaurant Artefact where all vegetables that are served come from their own vegetable garden. This restaurant is run by two very friendly men who perfectly combine hospitality and good food.

At the end you can stroll across the Roman bridge and enjoy the view and who knows, Tavira may have become your favorite place for a wonderful day out!

Warm regards, Michelle & Theo
